No Biology Blog?

21:36 by Nash. Filed under: All

Just go through Slashdot once, and you’ll find links to articles and such on a myriad ‘techno’ blogs. There are obviously writers who blog, like Samit Basu and as a result you have the literary blogs as well. But I have hardly come across any good Biology blogs… and that gives me ideas – I am going to write here about my experiements. I think some young people might get to know what biology is really about – which means that it is NOT about knowing the Latin names of a hundreds of organisms, nor is it about mindless cutting and hacking of creatures (astonishingly, that is what some people think!)

Tomorrow I am going to have a run of experiments in the morning with the confocal microscope and so I am transfecting cells. Oli – (Oliver , the post doc who I am working with now) said he thinks the laser is developing an oscillation. For the uninitiated , laser oscillations are a bad thing.

If you are looking through a tiny hole (confocal-ness), focussed on a tiny little cell (about 2 microns), through laser excitation on smaller area trying to figure out bright spots on the membrane of the thing…the whole setup BETTER freakin’ not move!

So that’s why they have buffered tables , and suspended microscopes and so on. They help, but they aren’t perfect. We’ll find out tomorrow about that, I guess.

The microarrays aren’t here yet, but we are expecting them anytime this week . After that, things should get even more interesting. I want to see the correlation between Quant. PCR and Array Intensity for measurements of mRNA conc. Anyone have any experience with that …apparently, it can be done, but is highly variable from group to group and system to system….

The Inner Life of the Cell

14:40 by Nash. Filed under: All

The people at Harvard and a XVIVO , a scientific animation company are making a fantastic movie of the cell , reconstructed from actual data, structures and so on. They released a trailor….

Note : Trailer is bandwidth intensive so I recommend that you pause it after the page loads, let the  shockwave load completely and then press play. Shockwave 8 required, download link on same page.

October (no) heat !

15:40 by Nash. Filed under: All

Yeah, I know. It’s been a long time, but I realised something. Before coming to Germany, I basically did nothing in the months after completing my course at IIT. And it felt good to come here and start doing something constructive, and that led to a suddent decrease in Orkut-ing, blogging and so on.

I quite like this independence (yes, perspective has changed since last post :) ). I mean, sure, its more work and you have to do things like arrange your dinner (I refrain from using the word ‘cook’ – its just not an accurate description of my activites preceding ingestion) and so on . But in the end it is more satisfying.

I am getting quite used to the idea of a feierabendbier :) …thats a workday evening beer….though I still dont know enough German to go and socialise. But that’s ok. There are enough people who know English around here too.

Oh yeah, its almost a month now since I got the Sony Ericsson K800i , and I am rather happy with its 3.2 MP camera and features. I know the camera res isn’t as good as what you get in standard cameras today. But hey…its a cybershot and there are still low-end standalone cams with similar resolution. I always used to think Nokia makes good phones, but SE is catching up too for sure. Some pictures are already put up near my Yahoo Photo Album.

Technically Winter begins from 3rd week of October here….so there is some Winter shopping to do. Gloves and a heavy jacket…absolutely necessary :)
